Google Voice may appear to be redundant given the company’s other communication platforms. It’s a communications suite that lets you make voice calls as well as send and receive text messages. This is distinct from Google Messages and the Phone app. When you activate Google Voice, you’ll be assigned a phone number that differs from the one you have with your carrier. It’s similar to a “burner phone” account, but you’ll need a valid phone number to get started.
