In a news release Google has been spotted working on a message editing feature for its Messages app, but it is not yet operational or confirmed by Google.  Recent Messages updates, such as Photomoji and visual effects, indicate that Google is attempting to compete with similar services, such as Apple’s iMessage and Telegram.

The growing use of Rich Communication Service (RCS) and the possibility of compatibility with iOS in 2024 may have an impact on messaging app competition and encourage further development.

Google has four flags in the latest Messages APK that suggest it’s working on allowing users to edit sent texts, as discovered by TheSpAndroid. The flags indicate that the edited message will be reflected on both the sender’s and recipient’s end, but the feature is not yet operational. Furthermore, it is unclear whether message editing will be developed further or made available to all users, and Google has not confirmed the feature.

Over the last few months, the company has made several changes to Messages, many of which appear to be an attempt to compete with similar services. For example, a feature called Photomoji has been created that allows users to use AI to create stickers from photos. More visual effects have also been added, such as on-screen animations that can be queued up when typing key phrases such as “It’s snowing.”
