To enable secure communication between the phone and the car, the technology employs ultra-wideband technology (UWB). The feature is now available on select Samsung and Google Pixel devices running Android 13 or later that support ultra-wideband.
BMW claims that because UWB is so precise, “the risk of relay attacks, where the radio signal is jammed or intercepted, is virtually eliminated,” making it a safe replacement for traditional keys. If others in your home use the same vehicle, it can also be set up to work with up to five other users who have compatible iOS or Android devices, so you don’t have to pass around keys.
