At present, users interacting with Google Search do not encounter native AI-based functionalities within the core product. Nevertheless, Google does offer experimental AI features for curious users through a dedicated space known as “Search Labs.” These experimental features provide a glimpse into the future possibilities of AI integration within the search experience.

One notable feature within the realm of AI-powered search enhancement is the Search Generative Experience (SGE). By enabling the SGE toggle, users can receive AI-generated overviews of their chosen topics. For instance, a simple query like “Pizza in downtown Seattle” could trigger an AI-powered summary that delves deeper into the subject matter. These AI overviews can be automatic in some instances, while others may require users to actively generate them for a more detailed exploration of their search interests.

Additionally, Google is reportedly exploring the introduction of “SGE while browsing,” a feature that augments web pages with AI-generated tools. These tools, presented in a card panel on the right-hand side of the page, offer functionalities such as highlighting key points and providing quick access through jump links to specific sections of the content. It is features like these that Google is considering monetizing, signaling a potential shift towards a hybrid subscription-based model for enhanced search capabilities.

According to insights from The Financial Times, the proposed subscription fee would be applicable solely to accessing these AI-powered features, while the core Search product would remain free for all users. As ads continue to serve as the primary revenue stream for Google Search, users opting for the subscription model would still encounter advertisements during their search interactions. This approach aims to strike a balance between providing innovative AI-driven features to interested users and maintaining the ad-supported foundation that sustains Google’s profitability.
