Several users have reported that the green dot on their Android phones remains even when they are not actively using the camera or microphone. When they checked the Privacy Dashboard, they discovered that WhatsApp was constantly using the microphone.
Even if the app is no longer in use or is running in the background removed from recent apps, it continues to use the microphone. Screenshots posted by affected users show continuous microphone use for several minutes in a row. We think that this is a bug in Android that causes information in their Privacy Dashboard to be misattributed, and we have asked Google to investigate and correct the problem.
