Android News: Gemini 4 Argon, Play in Gemini & ColorOS 17

Google dominated the Android news cycle on October 13, launching its flagship Gemini 4 Argon model and unveiling a wide-ranging Google Play update that pulls apps into Gemini chats and lets people run their own AI-built apps. Elsewhere, OPPO formally launched ColorOS 17 with dated rollouts for OnePlus and realme phones, and a fresh leak gave us our clearest look yet at Samsung’s Android XR glasses.
Gemini 4 Argon Rolls Out to Gemini App Subscribers
Google released Gemini 4 Argon, its new flagship model, and made it available the same day in the Gemini app for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, as well as in AI Mode in Search. Google says Argon is stronger at reasoning, math and visual coding, follows style instructions more closely, and gives more direct answers with less repetition. Developers can reach it through the paid Gemini API tier, AI Studio and Android Studio.
For Android users on a paid Gemini plan, this is the most significant upgrade to the assistant on their phones in months. Free-tier users do not get Argon for now, so the gap between paid and free Gemini on Android widens.

Google Play Adds “Play in Gemini,” Personal AI Apps and App Comparisons
In a separate announcement, Google detailed a long list of Play Store changes. “Play in Gemini” will bring Play apps and games into Gemini conversations and is rolling out to all Gemini users soon. Starting now in select markets, including the US, adults can build a personal Android app in Google AI Studio and run it privately on their own device through Play, without a developer account. Ask Play can also compare two apps side by side, highlighting key differences and what users say about them.
Gamers get Game Finder, which recommends titles based on a “Gamer DNA” profile and is live in English for US users. Together, these changes make Play less of a storefront and more of an AI-driven discovery layer, and they offer a sanctioned alternative to sideloading for personal apps.

Cars With Google Built-In Get a Redesigned Play Store and Smarter YouTube
Vehicles running Google built-in are getting a redesigned Play Store that adapts to each car’s screen shape and size, shows different collections when parked or driving, and supports one-tap installs. New in-car apps include STARZ, Firefox, Ludo King and JioHotstar. YouTube will also switch to audio-only once the car starts moving, instead of stopping playback.
The update arrives automatically over the coming weeks. For drivers, the YouTube change is the most practical improvement, since a video started while parked will now keep playing as audio.

Update: ColorOS 17 Launches Globally With OnePlus and realme Rollout Dates
Following last week’s open beta, OPPO has officially launched Android 17-based ColorOS 17 for global markets, and OnePlus and realme have published their schedules. Stable builds start on October 29 for the OnePlus 15, OnePlus Pad 4 and realme GT 8 Pro series, followed on October 30 by the OnePlus 15R, OnePlus 13 and 13s. Other models follow from November through the first quarter of 2027.
This is also the first big release since OnePlus announced it is moving its phones from OxygenOS to ColorOS. Owners now have a firm date, but rollouts will be staged by region and carrier-locked models may lag.

Leak: Samsung’s Android XR Glasses Detailed With 9-Hour Battery
Note: This section is based on leaked information that Samsung has not confirmed.
A leak first published by SammyGuru shows Samsung’s first Android XR smart glasses in frames from Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, with about 25 style and color combinations. Reported specs include a Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip, a 12MP camera that records 3K video, a weight as low as 41 grams, and up to 9 hours of battery life, or 72 hours with the case.
Samsung has not announced pricing or a date, though reports point to November. If accurate, these glasses would be the first mainstream, Gemini-driven Android XR eyewear to take on Meta’s Ray-Ban line.

Google Home Bug Is Scrambling Device Rooms
Some Google Home users report that devices they had assigned to rooms now show up under “Linked to you,” affecting Google hardware as well as Kasa, Tapo and generic smart bulbs. Device settings still list the correct room, which suggests a display or sync problem rather than lost configuration. Force-closing the Android app helps only temporarily.
Google has not acknowledged the issue yet. Some users suspect the Google Home Public Preview, but leaving it is not a proven fix.

Bottom Line
Gemini 4 Argon and the Play Store overhaul are today’s headline stories. Together they show Google building Gemini deeper into how Android users find, install and even create apps. OnePlus and realme owners should mark October 29 for ColorOS 17, and Samsung’s leaked glasses suggest Android XR eyewear could arrive within weeks.
