Google Is Moving Android From Your Car’s Dashboard Into Its Brain
Google has announced Android Automotive OS for Software Defined Vehicles — AAOS SDV — extending Android’s role in cars far beyond the infotainment touchscreen and into the non-safety core computing systems that govern climate control, lighting, seating, digital key management, and proactive vehicle maintenance. Built on a “headless” Android native stack, AAOS SDV replaces the fragmented multi-supplier software architectures most automakers currently use with a unified, open-source platform that enables granular, service-level OTA updates. Renault is already building on it for the Trafic e-Tech, with production starting late 2026. Qualcomm is providing a turnkey hardware stack via Snapdragon Digital Chassis. Open-source release is planned for later this year.
