Android Roundup: Gemini Now Uses Your Google Maps Saves as One UI 9 Bugs Hit Galaxy Phones

Google is pushing Gemini deeper into everyday Android use, letting Personal Intelligence draw on your Google Maps history while lining up a new top-tier reasoning model for AI Ultra subscribers. Samsung, meanwhile, is working through One UI 9 setup and battery complaints, and Google has posted clock-fix guidance for Android users in Canada ahead of permanent time changes.

Gemini Personal Intelligence Now Uses Your Google Maps Searches and Saved Places

Google has expanded Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app so it can draw directly on your Google Maps searches and saved places, rather than relying only on the broader Search services connection it used before. Combined with Calendar access, Gemini can suggest, for example, a restaurant from your saved list that sits close to where your last meeting of the day ends. The feature only works with your permission and is managed from Gemini’s personalization settings.

Separately, Google is notifying AI Ultra subscribers that Gemini 4 Argon will “replace Deep Think soon,” pointing them to Argon for heavier reasoning tasks. For most Android users, though, the Maps change is the bigger deal: it makes Gemini far more practical for planning errands and evenings out, provided you’re comfortable sharing that location history with it.

One UI 9 Growing Pains: Galaxy S26 Setup Bug and S24/S25 Battery Complaints

Some Galaxy S26 Ultra owners who reset their phones after installing One UI 9.0 are getting stuck during initial setup, with a “webpage is unavailable” error on the Samsung account screen. A Samsung representative on the company’s community forum traced the problem to an unstable system WebView on certain networks, and switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data has helped some users get past it. Samsung says a fix is in the works but hasn’t shared a date.

At the same time, a number of Galaxy S24 and S25 owners on Reddit and Samsung’s forums report heavier battery drain since moving to One UI 9. The complaints don’t appear widespread so far, but it’s worth keeping an eye on your battery stats after updating, and S26 owners may want to avoid a factory reset until Samsung’s fix arrives.

Google Explains How to Fix Android Clocks as Parts of Canada Drop Time Changes

When daylight saving time ends next month, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia will keep their current time instead of falling back, while other provinces and territories are making their own calls. Google has published guidance for Android users whose phones show the wrong time on November 1.

The first step is to install any pending updates from Google and your phone maker, then restart. If the clock is still off, turn on “Automatic time zone” and “Use location for time zone” under Date and Time settings, or switch automatic detection off and pick the correct Canadian time zone manually.

YouTube Drops the Subscriptions Tab From Its Android App’s Bottom Bar

YouTube is removing the Subscriptions tab from the bottom bar of its Android and iOS apps, where it has lived for nearly a decade. Subscriptions now appears as a feed in a redesigned top bar on the Home tab, next to new feeds for Live, Music and, for users with eligible subscriptions, Movies & TV. The side navigation drawer is going away as well.

YouTube is also introducing custom feeds: tap “+” on Home, describe what you want to watch, and the app builds a feed for you. Free users can keep up to three custom feeds and Premium members up to eight, starting in English for signed-in viewers in the U.S. Anyone who opens YouTube mainly to catch new uploads from followed channels will need to retrain some muscle memory.

Samsung Says Galaxy Z Fold 8 Sales in Europe Are Up 45% Over Fold 7

In a new UK Newsroom post, Samsung said Galaxy Z Fold 8 series sales in Europe rose 45% compared with the Z Fold 7 over the first nine weeks on sale. The company also said searches for the Fold 8 jumped 260% in September, peaking in the week Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo.

These are Samsung’s own figures and haven’t been independently verified, but they suggest Apple’s arrival in foldables is lifting interest across the whole category rather than simply pulling buyers toward the iPhone.

Fitbit Edge Won’t Support Google Wallet Payments

Google has confirmed that the Fitbit Edge, a $179 tracker with a display and built-in GPS that launches October 27, won’t include NFC for contactless payments. In a statement to Android Authority, Google said fewer than 1% of Charge 6 owners reported using the feature, so it prioritized hardware such as an altimeter instead.

That makes the Edge a tougher sell for anyone who likes leaving their phone and wallet at home during a run. If tapping to pay from your wrist matters, a Pixel Watch or another Wear OS watch remains the safer choice.

Bottom Line

The Gemini Maps upgrade and Samsung’s One UI 9 bugs are the stories most likely to affect your phone this week, so check your Gemini permissions and hold off on resetting a Galaxy S26 for now. Readers in Canada should keep Google’s time-zone steps handy before November 1, while YouTube’s redesign will reach most users soon whether they welcome it or not.
