Android News: Samsung October Patch Hits More Galaxy Phones

It was a quieter weekend for Android, but a few updates still matter for the phone in your pocket. Samsung’s October 2026 security patch is now reaching a much longer list of Galaxy phones and foldables, and Google has quietly corrected a Play system update that showed a date from next year. Elsewhere, YouTube set a timeline for its next video codec, RedMagic published its Android 17 roadmap, and OnePlus showed off its next Ace phones ahead of a China launch.

Samsung’s October 2026 Security Patch Expands Across Galaxy Flagships and Foldables

Samsung’s October security release, labeled SMR Oct-2026 Release 1, is now out for the Galaxy S26 and S25 families, including the S25 FE, along with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Z Fold 8, Z Flip 8, Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7. The Galaxy S24 series has it in South Korea so far, while the S23 series and the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 get it bundled with One UI 9.0. Mid-range models including the Galaxy A54, A34 and A18 are on the list too.

The patch addresses dozens of vulnerabilities, including nine critical Android flaws, and Samsung says more devices may pick it up through November. The rollout is staged and usually starts in South Korea, so check Settings > Software update > Download and install if it has not reached you yet.

Google Corrects the Play System Update That Said “January 2027”

Over the past week, many Android phones, mostly Galaxy models, showed a Google Play system update dated January 1, 2027. The content was the regular October 2026 build with the wrong label. A tiny follow-up update, around 11 KB, now switches the label back to October 2026 on Samsung phones.

The mislabel did not break apps or add future patches, so there is nothing to worry about security-wise. If your phone still shows the 2027 date, open Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Google Play system update to pull the correction. Google has not commented publicly on the mix-up.

YouTube Plans AV2 Streams as Early as 2027

YouTube says streams using the new AV2 video codec could start reaching the web as soon as early 2027. AV2 is estimated to be roughly 25 to 32 percent more efficient than AV1, which means sharper video at the same data use or less buffering on slower connections.

Android users should keep expectations modest for now. YouTube has not given a phone timeline, and AV2 benefits depend on hardware decoding support that very few devices have today. AV1 took years to become common on phones, so AV2 support could be a feature to watch for in 2027 and 2028 flagship chips.

RedMagic Publishes Its Android 17 Update Roadmap

RedMagic has shared when its gaming phones and tablets will get RedMagic OS 12, its Android 17-based software, which debuted on the RedMagic 12 Pro+. The RedMagic 11 Pro and 11S Pro series are first in line in December, followed by the Gaming Tablet 5 Pro in January. The RedMagic 10 Pro, 10S Pro, 11 Air and Gaming Tablet 3 Pro follow in March, and the 10 Air closes out the rollout in April.

The schedule covers China only, so global owners will need to wait for a separate timeline. Still, it gives gamers a clear idea of how long they will wait for Android 17.

OnePlus Shows the Ace 7 and Ace 7 Pro Ahead of an October 29 China Launch

OnePlus has officially shown the Ace 7 and Ace 7 Pro in all of their colors ahead of their October 29 launch in China. The Ace 7 comes in black, white and a gradient finish, while the Ace 7 Pro adds a third color translated as “Windbreaker.” The Ace 7 is expected to use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5V and the Pro the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

Camera and fingerprint details, including a rumored 200MP main sensor, come from leaks and are not confirmed yet. Ace phones have often become global OnePlus models under different names, so this launch is worth watching as OnePlus shifts its software to ColorOS.

Note: Camera and fingerprint specs for the Ace 7 series are based on leaks and remain unconfirmed by OnePlus.

Bottom Line

If you own a recent Galaxy phone, the October security patch is the update to install first, and the Play system date fix is a harmless cleanup you can grab at the same time. The YouTube AV2 plan and RedMagic’s roadmap are longer-term stories, while the OnePlus Ace 7 launch this week could hint at the next global OnePlus phones.
