Saturday June 20, 2026: XREAL Aura Is Real, Snapdragon Reality Elite Lands, Wear OS 7 on Your Wrist

The week that began with Android 17 stable rolling out to Pixel devices is ending with the Android XR ecosystem taking its clearest shape yet. XREAL Aura graduated from prototype showcase to reservations-open shipping product at Augmented World Expo 2026 in Long Beach, California. Qualcomm revealed the chip making it possible. Wear OS 7 arrived on Pixel Watch hardware. And a Gemini bug in Android Auto is making life frustrating for drivers who want to place calls. Saturday’s full briefing below.

1. XREAL Aura Is Official — Fall 2026, Under $1,500, Reservations Open Now

From Project Aura to XREAL Aura

XREAL officially unveiled XREAL Aura at AWE 2026 on June 16, dropping the “Project” prefix that has qualified every mention of the device since its prototype debut at the Android XR Edition show in December 2025. The name change signals what the product milestone represents: this is no longer a developer preview or a concept demonstration. It is a product with a launch window, a reservation system, and a confirmed price ceiling.

XREAL Aura is the first wired Android XR glasses built in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. The hardware combines lightweight optical see-through frames — under 95 grams of on-head weight — with a separate compute puck that handles the heavy XR processing via Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite platform. The split-compute architecture is the design decision that makes the glasses genuinely wearable at their weight: the processing hardware that would otherwise sit on your face lives in a tethered puck that can be pocketed.

The Specifications

The frame side of XREAL Aura provides the optical experience: a 70-degree field of view with a virtually borderless visual canvas, world-facing sensors enabling hand tracking and six degrees of freedom positional tracking, and deep integration with Gemini via Android XR. The puck side runs Snapdragon Reality Elite for XR processing and AI inference, while XREAL’s own X1S Spatial Coprocessor inside the frames handles low-latency display output and sensor fusion.

Gemini on XREAL Aura is contextually aware — with user permission, it can understand what the wearer sees through the optical passthrough, what is on screen in running applications, and what is in the surrounding environment, providing assistance through voice and multimodal AI without requiring the wearer to reach for a phone.

Price, Regions and How to Reserve

The final retail price has not been announced, but XREAL has confirmed a ceiling: the base model will not exceed $1,500 before tax. For context, the Samsung Galaxy XR headset launched at $1,799. XREAL Aura sits below that at an unconfirmed price under $1,500 — positioning it as a more accessible entry to Android XR hardware than the headset tier.

Two reservation paths are open at xreal.com/aura. The standard reservation costs $99 and converts to a $199 launch credit against the final purchase price — effectively saving $100 from the retail price if applied at launch. A limited Founder Priority Pass costs $299, guarantees launch-day delivery, and includes a special-edition numbered device with the reservation number permanently printed on the hardware. Only 2,000 Founder Pass units are available. Both reservations are fully refundable before final purchase confirmation.

Launch regions for the initial Fall 2026 wave: United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and South Korea. A broad list of European countries follows shortly after the Fall wave. The Android XR Developer Catalyst Programme — the free-device path for eligible developers — remains open for applications through the XREAL Aura page.

What Is Confirmed for Launch Content

XREAL announced a selection of confirmed apps and experiences for the Aura launch window. Entertainment content includes a Fox Sports XR app for live sports viewing in a virtual stadium environment, and two gaming experiences — Fallout: Factions and Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars. The Fox Sports XR app is the most commercially significant confirmed content partnership, providing an immediate compelling use case for the hardware in sports-viewing households.

All Android apps are available through the Google Play Store on XREAL Aura, as Android XR runs standard Android applications alongside XR-native experiences. The distinction between Play Store apps running in compatibility mode and apps built specifically for the XR form factor will matter more as the developer ecosystem grows, but at launch, every app you already use on Android is accessible on the device.

2. Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite — The XR Chip That Makes It Possible

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon Reality Elite at AWE 2026 — the XR platform powering XREAL Aura and the flagship chip that will define the Android XR hardware tier for the next product generation.

The Performance Jump

The headline figure is a 160% improvement in AI performance, reaching 48 TOPS via a dedicated NPU. That is enough to run large language models and large vision models entirely on-device — no Wi-Fi, no cloud connection required. For an XR device that needs Gemini to understand the wearer’s visual context and environment in real time, on-device AI inference without network dependency is not a nice-to-have: it is the baseline condition for reliable performance in any environment.

The GPU improves 60% and the CPU 30%, both within the same power budget as the previous Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. The chip runs 12°C cooler under load and consumes 20% less energy — both figures that matter significantly when the device sits on your face for extended sessions. A chip that runs hot cannot be worn comfortably for hours. A chip that drains its battery in 90 minutes cannot sustain the use cases the hardware is designed for.

What It Means for Android XR

Snapdragon Reality Elite is the first XR chip specifically designed for the Android XR platform tier rather than adapted from a broader mobile chip lineage. Qualcomm’s partnership with Google on Android XR means the chip’s architecture is co-optimised for the platform’s AI and XR workloads rather than being a general-purpose chip with XR extensions bolted on.

For developers building on Android XR: the Reality Elite’s on-device AI capability means experiences that require Gemini’s visual understanding do not need to manage network availability as a constraint. An application that uses Gemini to understand what the wearer sees can be designed for that feature being always available rather than conditionally available depending on connectivity.

3. Wear OS 7 Rolls Out to Pixel Watch 4, 3, and 2

Google began rolling out the Wear OS 7 update to the Pixel Watch 4, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Watch 2 on June 16 — the same day Android 17 stable launched for Pixel phones. The coordinated deployment across phone and watch platforms means Pixel Watch owners can experience the full connected Android 17 + Wear OS 7 ecosystem from day one rather than waiting for a separate watch update.

Wear OS 7 for Pixel Watch delivers the Wear Widgets system replacing full-screen Tiles, the 10% battery life improvement from platform-level power management optimisations, Live Updates on the watch face, and AppFunctions support enabling Gemini to invoke watch-based actions via voice. Emergency Detection integration in the June Drop adds car crash, fall, and loss of pulse detection to emergency sharing features on Pixel Watch, with the ability to notify emergency contacts across multiple detection scenarios from the wrist.

The Phone by Google app has also received a Material 3 Expressive redesign on Wear OS — one of the first third-party Google apps to adopt the updated design language on the watch platform. The redesign affects the call interface, recent calls view, and the new fake call detection status indicator that appears when Android 17’s call verification system is active.

To check for the Wear OS 7 update on your Pixel Watch: open the Watch app on your connected Android 17 Pixel, navigate to Watch updates, and check for the available update. The rollout is staged and may take several days to reach all units.

4. Quick Hits

Gemini Android Auto Bug — Call-Making Broken for Some Users

A bug in the current Android Auto build is preventing some users from making calls through Gemini — the request is processed but no call initiates, and the error is not limited to in-car use. The bug affects any Gemini interaction that triggers an outgoing call, including from the Gemini app on the phone when Android Auto is connected. No fix has been confirmed as of June 20. If call-making via Gemini is critical to your Android Auto workflow, use the direct Contacts dialling interface as a workaround until a patch ships.

Google Home “Play the News” Command Broken

A recent Google Home app update changed how Gemini handles the “play the news” command — the familiar phrase that previously triggered a news briefing on Nest speakers and displays no longer works as expected following Gemini’s expanded role in Google Home. The change appears to be an unintended consequence of the transition from Assistant-style command handling to Gemini’s more conversational interpretation of requests. Rephrasing as “play a news podcast” or naming a specific news source directly is the current workaround.

Samsung Galaxy XR Comes to the UK

Following its limited US launch, Samsung Galaxy XR is now officially coming to the United Kingdom, with pre-orders opening this week. Galaxy XR launched in the US earlier this year and the UK expansion makes it the first market outside North America to receive the device. Pricing for the UK launch has not been confirmed in the initial pre-order announcement.
