REDMAGIC Astra 2 Gaming Tablet: Specs, Price, July 17 Launch

REDMAGIC launched the Gaming Tablet 5 Pro in China on June 30, 2026, and simultaneously confirmed that the device will reach international markets on July 17, 2026 under the REDMAGIC Astra 2 branding. Global pricing, regional configurations, and availability details will be announced on the same date. In China, the tablet starts at CNY 5,299 in a 12GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration, rising to CNY 6,999 for the 16GB RAM and 1TB UFS 4.1 Pro top tier.

The Astra 2 is a meaningful hardware generation step beyond the original Astra – not a spec refresh but a category shift on multiple dimensions simultaneously. It is the first gaming tablet with an active liquid cooling system. It has a higher refresh rate display than its predecessor. It adds built-in Steam PC game emulation that was absent from the first generation. And it carries Qualcomm’s most powerful current mobile processor alongside REDMAGIC’s own secondary gaming chip stack.

Here is the complete breakdown of everything confirmed.

Display – 185Hz OLED With Sub-Millisecond Touch Response

The display is where the Astra 2 makes its strongest case as an eSports-grade device. The 9.06-inch OLED panel runs at 185Hz – up from 165Hz on the original Astra – using the latest X10 OLED material that reaches 1,600 nits of peak brightness and 1,100 nits full-screen brightness. At a 2.4K resolution of 1,504 by 2,400 pixels, the pixel density on a sub-10-inch display produces a sharp image that holds up for both fine-detail gaming and media consumption.

The touch layer is equally impressive on paper. The Synaptics S3930 touch controller delivers a 300Hz multi-touch sampling rate with an instantaneous touch response of up to 2,000Hz and a stated 1ms input latency. REDMAGIC has also included a wet-touch algorithm designed to maintain touch accuracy when the display is exposed to light moisture – relevant for extended gaming sessions in warm environments.

Bezels measure 4.9mm on all sides, giving the display a 90.1% screen-to-body ratio. There is no raised camera module on the rear, which produces a completely flat back surface that is more comfortable to hold in landscape orientation for extended periods. This design choice eliminates the asymmetric grip problem that rear camera bumps create on tablets used primarily in horizontal orientation.

Processor and Performance Stack

The Astra 2 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, manufactured on TSMC’s 3nm process. This is the same generation silicon powering the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and other 2026 Android flagship devices – there is no question about raw processing headroom at this specification level.

REDMAGIC pairs the Snapdragon with two proprietary components that handle specific performance dimensions the main chip is not optimised for. The RedCore R4 gaming chip offloads GPU-adjacent rendering tasks, handling graphics workloads that would otherwise compete with the primary processor for thermal budget. The Energy Cube 3.0 operates as an AI-powered resource allocator, predicting frame timing requirements and dynamically adjusting power delivery to maintain consistent frame rates rather than the boom-bust performance cycles that unmanaged gaming workloads tend to produce.

The three-component performance stack – Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, RedCore R4, and Energy Cube 3.0 – is REDMAGIC’s argument that gaming performance requires active management beyond raw processing power. Whether that argument holds up in extended real-world gaming sessions will be one of the first things reviewers test.

Storage is UFS 4.1 Pro across all configurations – the fastest UFS standard available, directly relevant to game load times and asset streaming performance.

Active Liquid Cooling – An Industry First for Tablets

The Astra 2’s most technically distinctive feature is also its most visually striking. REDMAGIC has fitted a genuine active liquid cooling system to the Gaming Tablet 5 Pro – a technology previously confined to gaming smartphones and desktop PCs. This is the first time active liquid cooling has appeared in any tablet.

The system uses an ultra-thin 0.48mm micro pump to continuously circulate fluorinated coolant through nano-sealed tubing. The fluorinated coolant is rated to operate between -60°C and 125°C, providing a substantial thermal buffer beyond the temperature range any mobile device would realistically encounter. REDMAGIC layers additional thermal management on top of the liquid cooling circuit – Liquid Metal 3.0 thermal compound, a large vapour chamber, and multiple heat dissipation layers work in combination with the liquid loop.

The cooling circuit is visible through REDMAGIC’s transparent rear panel design – the same aesthetic the brand has used across its gaming smartphone lineup. Alongside the visible cooling system, 11 RGB LED units are mounted in the rear with proprietary light-guiding materials, producing customisable lighting effects that sync dynamically during gameplay. It is a divisive aesthetic choice that is unambiguously distinctive on a shelf of otherwise uniform-looking tablets.

The practical significance of active liquid cooling for a gaming tablet is sustained performance under load. Passive cooling systems – vapour chambers, graphite sheets, copper heat spreaders – manage heat by spreading it to a larger surface area, but they eventually reach thermal saturation under sustained high-load workloads. Active liquid cooling continuously removes heat from the primary thermal zones rather than simply redistributing it, which is why REDMAGIC expects the Astra 2 to sustain peak performance for longer continuous gaming sessions than passive-cooled alternatives can manage.

Built-In PC Game Emulation With Steam Support

The Astra 2’s most significant software differentiation from every other Android gaming tablet is native PC game emulation – baked into the operating system rather than implemented through a sideloaded third-party app.

REDMAGIC has built an x86 translation layer directly into the firmware that allows the tablet to run PC game executables. At launch, two access methods are supported: local EXE file installation for PC game executables, and Steam login for direct access to a Steam library. REDMAGIC states that emulated titles can run at up to 2K resolution at 144Hz – though individual game performance will vary depending on the title’s engine and optimisation requirements.

Broader compatibility for additional storefronts – the Epic Games Store, GOG, and other PC game distribution platforms – is expected around or after the July 17 global launch. The absence of those stores at launch is a genuine limitation for gamers whose libraries are distributed across platforms rather than consolidated on Steam. The July 17 global announcement may include updates on timeline.

The PC emulation capability puts the Astra 2 in a different competitive category than any other Android gaming tablet. Rather than competing only with the Lenovo Legion Tab, it positions itself as an alternative to devices like the Steam Deck Lite or handheld Windows gaming PCs at the lower end of that market – particularly for users whose primary use case is mobile gaming with Steam access rather than full Windows functionality.

The eSports certification credentials reinforce the native Android gaming performance in parallel. REDMAGIC has obtained certifications for the Gaming Tablet 5 Pro across competitive events in China covering Call of Duty: Mobile, CrossFire Mobile, Wild Rift, Arena Breakout, and the Speed League.

Battery, Charging, and Connectivity

The Astra 2 packs an 8,300mAh battery. The Chinese version supports 80W fast charging – global charging speed has not been confirmed yet and will be announced on July 17. Dual USB-C ports are fitted, both supporting bypass charging that routes incoming power directly to the system rather than through the battery during gameplay, which reduces battery heat under load. Reverse charging is also supported for compatible accessories.

Two USB-C ports on a landscape-oriented gaming tablet is a practical ergonomic decision. Portrait chargers that connect through a single port at the bottom of the device create an awkward cable position during horizontal play. With ports on both the top and bottom edges in landscape orientation, the charging cable can route naturally to whichever side is convenient without interfering with grip.

Audio is handled by a 1227 stereo speaker system designed around bass response and spatial audio for gaming, film, and music content.

Software – Android 16 With MORA AI Agent 2.0

The Astra 2 runs REDMAGIC OS 11.5, based on Android 16. MORA AI Agent 2.0 is the AI system layer that handles gameplay optimisation – dynamically adjusting game settings, predicting workload requirements, and assisting with everyday device tasks outside gaming contexts.

Software support timelines have not been announced. For a device at this price point targeting a performance-conscious audience, the absence of a confirmed Android version update commitment is a gap worth noting. The Astra 2’s predecessor offered software support that was considered adequate but not outstanding by gaming-oriented buyers. REDMAGIC has not addressed this for the Astra 2.

Pricing and Availability

China pricing (Gaming Tablet 5 Pro):

  • 12GB + 256GB: CNY 5,299 (approximately $780)
  • 16GB + 512GB: CNY 5,999 (approximately $883)
  • 16GB + 1TB: CNY 6,999 (approximately $1,030)

Global pricing (REDMAGIC Astra 2): To be announced July 17, 2026. The original Astra launched globally at $499. REDMAGIC has not confirmed whether that price point holds for the Astra 2, and the China pricing for the 5 Pro is meaningfully higher than implied by a $499 global starting point. Global pricing will be confirmed on July 17 at redmagic.gg.

Colors: Silver Wing and Dark Night in China. Global colour options may differ and will be confirmed at launch.

How It Compares to the Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 5

The only other Android gaming tablet in a comparable category is the Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 5, which launched earlier this year at $849. A comparison on the specifications that matter most for gaming:

The Astra 2’s 9.06-inch 185Hz OLED versus the Legion Tab’s 8.8-inch 165Hz IPS LCD is a clear display advantage for REDMAGIC – OLED’s contrast and motion clarity at a higher refresh rate represents a meaningful difference in gaming visuals. Both devices use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, making processor performance roughly equivalent. The Lenovo’s 9,000mAh battery edges the Astra 2’s 8,300mAh on paper, though REDMAGIC’s 80W charging charges back faster than Lenovo’s 68W. The Astra 2’s active liquid cooling is expected to sustain higher frame rates for longer sessions than the Legion Tab’s passive vapour chamber. And the Astra 2’s built-in Steam emulation has no equivalent on the Legion Tab.

If global pricing lands at or near $499, the price gap against the $849 Legion Tab Gen 5 would be the decisive differentiator for most buyers evaluating the two devices.
