May 2026 Android Roundup: I/O Week, Android 17, AI & More

Welcome to your Sunday double briefing: the week of May 25–31, and the complete May 2026 monthly review. May was not just a big month for Android. By any reasonable measure it was the most consequential single month in the platform’s recent history. Here is every story, organised by week, with the full month context that makes each story’s significance clear.

MAY WEEK 1 (May 1–9): The Pre-Show Build-Up

The week before The Android Show was defined by three major developments that arrived as setup for everything that followed.

Google Fitbit Air launched at $99. The Fitbit Air is a screenless fitness band priced at $99.99 that works on Android and iOS, features a 7-day battery with 5-minute quick charge to 1 day, tracks heart rate, SpO2, skin temperature, and activity, with 3 months of Google Health Premium included. First-wave reviews this week confirmed the device delivers on its promise β€”Β  calling it “really great for $99.” Available at Google Store, Amazon, and Best Buy.Β

Fitbit rebranded to Google Health. The Fitbit app became the Google Health app starting May 19, with Google Fit users migrating later in the year. Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini and using sleep, heart rate, and activity data for personalised recommendations, launched alongside the rebrand.

Samsung One UI 8.5 stable. After four months of beta, One UI 8.5 shipped stable to the Galaxy S25 series, Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Galaxy Z Flip 7 on May 6. Based on Android 16 QPR2, it brought Ambient Design blur, Perplexity-powered Bixby, Audio Eraser, and Photo Assist. The May Pixel update also landed this week with camera, charging, and display fixes β€” including a critical Pixel 10 bootloader warning for manual flashers covered in our dedicated article.

MAY WEEK 2 (May 10–16): The Android Show β€” Everything Changed

The Android Show | I/O Edition streamed May 12 at 10 AM PT β€” Google’s biggest single Android announcement day in years.Β

Gemini Intelligence announced. Google announced Gemini Intelligence β€” a suite of AI features that transitions Android from an operating system to an intelligence system. Cross-app task automation, Create My Widget via RemoteCompose, Rambler voice cleanup, Personal Intelligence Autofill, and the AppFunctions API. Rolling out summer 2026 on latest Samsung Galaxy and Pixel hardware, then expanding to watches, cars, glasses, and laptops.Β

Googlebooks revealed. Google’s Android-based laptop category launched with hardware partners Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Magic Pointer, Gemini Intelligence integration, and RemoteCompose-powered widget creation demonstrated.

Android Auto overhauled. Customisable home screen widgets, video playback, 3D Immersive Google Maps navigation, Dolby Atmos, and Gemini Intelligence context-awareness for messages, calendar, and email.

Android 17 security roadmap detailed. Eugene Liderman’s post outlined 12 major security upgrades including verified financial calls, Chrome APK scanning, dynamic signal monitoring, and quantum-resistant encryption. Full developer breakdown in our dedicated security article

Gemini for Home got Continued Conversation. Free, global, no subscription β€” finally restoring the wake-word-free follow-up experience that disappeared when Google replaced Assistant with Gemini.

The Month in One Paragraph

May 2026 was the month Google stopped describing Android’s AI future and started deploying it. Gemini Intelligence moved from concept to product. AppFunctions moved from I/O announcement to Play Services delivery. Wear OS 7 set the watch platform’s direction for the next generation. Android XR glasses moved from prototype to confirmed 2026 products. Google AI Studio turned browser tabs into native Android app generators. Fitbit became Google Health. Samsung set its foldable clock for July 22. And Android 17 β€” the platform that ties all of these threads together β€” is approximately one week from stable launch. June 2026 is when Android’s biggest year becomes Android users’ everyday reality.
